Exceptions are the transactions that need a second pair of eyes. This guide reviews them without accusing anyone.

**Before you start:** a loss-prevention role: manager, analyst or area manager. You can never clear an exception you created yourself.

## Open the queue

1. Open **Security › Exceptions**.
2. Filter by severity: **watch**, **elevated** or **critical**. Higher severities need a higher role to clear.
3. Use the period selector (7, 30 or 90 days) at the top of the security screens.

## Disposition an exception

1. Open the row. It shows the transaction, the person, the amount and the evidence references.
2. Choose a disposition: reviewed and cleared, needs follow-up, or escalate to a case.
3. Add a note in neutral language. The product bans accusatory wording in automated text; keep yours the same: pattern, variance, finding.
4. Save. Your name and time are recorded.

## Record shrinkage from other sources

Under **Security › Shrinkage**, record:

- **Waste** that was not captured in Stock.
- **Transfer discrepancies** when a receiving outlet counted a different quantity.
- **Vendor claims** for short deliveries or damaged goods.

Each record has its own follow-up and can be advanced to resolved.

## Escalate to a case

When a pattern needs investigation, open a case from the exception. See [Open a loss-prevention case](/docs/how-to/open-a-loss-prevention-case).
